senile denial

okay, so today I had a senior moment… whoops. i’m still in my twenties, so this is quite inexcusable. ashley and i were watching three of the kids from church today,  so, there we were- bouncing up and down on the trampoline when kathryn (the most precocious 9 year old i’ve ever met in my life…and i teach) says, “miss rachel, how old are you?”   “how old do you think i am?” “15!” she confidently asserted…ashely and i are cracking up at this point- seriously, these kids are hilarious; then we asked what made her guess 15. was it that I knew the author of her kids books, the swinging with her four year old brother?  “um… i guess it’s cause you act like it, and you look 15.”  hmmm…  “sorry kiddo, wrong. i am… I am……  ???  i’m 24…?” i said doubtfully… (all the while thinking, “NO it can’t be true, I must be 23.. let me think… 1982, 1992, 2002…counting…counting…)  when Ashley looks over at me and says, “rachel, you’re 25!”

“what?! me!? 25… wait.. wait… yes. omigosh. I’m 25!! why god why?!?! I’m 25!!!”  i thanked kathryn for sweet guess (yup, now that i’ve crossed over the thresh hold into my mid twenties, younger guesses are a compliment- ha ha, never thought i’d say that), and told her to always always guess younger, even if you think you’re wrong, better to err on the side of way too young, even ridiculousy so, then too old.

ahhh, kids, you gotta love ‘em, even if they  can be stark reminders of the reality of our aging. yup, i’m getting older… sad… but at least i can still jump on a trampoline without putting my back out.

quotableness…

happiness is a journey, not a destination…

“for a long time it seemed to me that life was about to begin- real life. but there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. at last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life. this perspective has helped meto see there is no way to happiness. happiness is the way. so treasure every moment you have and remember that time waits for no one.”
